Our approach to building capacity around youth development draws on best practices in organizational development, adult learning and group systems theory. We leverage these areas of expertise to help our clients build effective infrastructure, craft intentional and rigorous strategies and develop a culture where excellent youth development practice can take root. We then facilitate the translation of youth development principles into concrete strategies that practitioners can use in their everyday work with youth.

Our approach is centered on YDI's Framework for Positive Youth Development. Our Framework is based on decades of research and practical experience, and reflects young people's core developmental needs. The Framework views practices, programming and policy through the three interrelated spheres of connectedness, preparation and authentic participation:

  • Connectedness: young people do everything through relationships
  • Preparation: all young people strive for mastery
  • Authentic Participation: young people gain confidence through opportunities to impact the world around them
